“How Water Works in Eastwick” Community Workshop
Location: Eastwick Wellness Center, 2821 Island Avenue, Philadelphia PA 19153.
All are invited to join this community workshop to better understand climate adaptation and flood mitigation strategies that can be integrated into the Eastwick Planning Process. Hosted by the Consortium for Climate Research in the Urban Northeast (CCRUN) and Lower Darby Creek Area Research Team.

Cobbs Creek Cleanup, part of Darby Creek Cleanup
Location: Cobbs Creek at 78th Street/Saturn Place (near Penrose Elementary School), Philadelphia PA 19153.
Sponsored by Darby Creek Valley Association, in partnership with many friends and local organizations. Celebrate Earth Day by volunteering to help clean-up parts of the lower Darby-Cobbs Creek watershed. EFNC sponsors the Eastwick cleanup site along the Cobbs Creek. Join fellow volunteers at 9:00 am to help cleanup the community! Wear old clothes and sturdy shoes that will get muddy. Gloves, trash bags, and light refreshments will be provided.

Monday, April 24, 2017 – 6:00 – 8:00 pm
Eastwick public lands planning Public Meeting
Location: St. Paul’s AME Church, Lindbergh Blvd, Philadelphia PA 19153.
All invited to meet the planning team, hear about the process, and provide YOUR input for visioning 200 acres of public lands in lower Eastwick.

Wednesday, January 18, 2017 – 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm.
Shop-Rite hosts Public Community Meeting in partnership with EFNC
Location: Eastwick Wellness Center, 2821 Island Avenue, Philadelphia PA 19153.
More than 165 residents and stakeholders attended a meeting to learn about plans for ShopRite and Penrose Plaza. Refreshments provided. Speakers included Jeff Brown, Owner and CEO of Brown’s Super Stores, and Jason Abrams, of Abrams Realty and Development (owners of Penrose Plaza).

EFNC Public Community Meeting – Meet new Airport CEO Chellie Cameron
Location: Eastwick Wellness Center, 2821 Island Avenue, Philadelphia PA 19153.
Bring a neighbor and attend to learn more about Airport activities, changes and planning in Eastwick. Ms. Cameron and her staff will make a presentation and answer questions. Public planning meeting to provide a forum for residents of Lower SW Philadelphia, including Eastwick, to contribute suggestions, ideas and input in the future of the community, including zoning, city-owned land and facilities, and public investments in the district.

Historic announcements about Korman, 128-acre green space, Eastwick Community Planning and flood mitigation.  Speakers included Brian Abernathy from Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority (PRA), Joanne Dahme from  Philadelphia Water Department (PWD), Councilman Kenyatta Johnson, and Senator Anthony H. Williams were on-hand to provide first-hand reports and answer questions.

Stormwater Training – Info, Insights and Outreach Program Meeting
Location:  John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge, 8601 Lindbergh Blvd, Philadelphia PA 19153.
EFNC co-sponsors this informative program meeting in partnership with Delaware Riverkeeper Network. Dr. Steve Souza, President of Princeton Hydro Engineering firm and a leading expert in the field, will discuss causes and effective solutions for stormwater, erosion and associated pollution. Eastwick residents and stakeholders are encouraged to come out for this program meeting, and engage in learning about an important community issue.

EPA Public Meeting Announcing Official Clearview Landfill Cleanup Plan (“ROD”)
Location:  Eastwick Recreation Center, 80th Street and Mars Place, Philadelphia PA 19153.
EFNC attended this EPA-sponsored (federally-required) meeting to hear details about the the EPA cleanup plan for Clearview Landfill, a 60-acre superfund site located along the lower Darby Creek in residential Eastwick neighborhood. EFNC is actively working with the EPA to ensure the community is engaged in the process, and the cleanup is safe and effective.

EFNC Public Community Meeting discussing Eastwick health concerns and Clearview Landfill cleanup
Location:  John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge, 8601 Lindbergh Blvc, Philadelphia PA 19153.
More than 80 people attended. Speakers included Dr. Marilyn Howarth (Director of Community Outreach and Engagement Core, Center of Excellence in Environmental Toxicology, University of Pennsylvania), Josh Barber (Remedial Project Manager Region 3, EPA), and Derron LaBrake (Ecological Consultant, Darby Creek Valley Association). EFNC President Terry Williams introduced new Heinz Refuge Manager Lamar Gore. PILCOP lawyer Amy Laura Cahn moderated Q&A session.

EFNC Public Community Meeting highlighting two years of Eastwick Action
Location:  Eastwick Wellness Center, 2821 Island Avenue, Philadelphia PA 19153.

EFNC Public Community Meeting featuring FEMA Representatives and Flood Insurance Information
Location:  Eastwick Wellness Center, 2821 Island Avenue, Philadelphia PA 19153.
More than 150 people attended.  FEMA Region III Regional Administrator MaryAnn Tierney and FEMA Flood Insurance Specialist Richard Sobota provided information and addressed questions from community about flood mapping, flood insurance and disparities in premium rates.  (January 9 Community Meeting Flyer – PDF)

Thursday, July 18, 2013 – 6:00 – 8:00 pm.
EPA Hosts Q&A Session about Clearview Landfill, Collaborating with EFNC
Location:  John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge, Visitors Center auditorium, 8601 Lindbergh Blvd., Philadelphia PA 19153.
All welcome and encouraged to attend.  EPA Project team, including representatives Josh Barber and Larry Brown, will be available to answer questions about site work on Lower Darby Creek Area (LDCA) Superfund site, and provide information about upcoming proposed cleanup plans for the Clearview Landfill.  [EPA mailed postcard to area residents on 7/2/2013, with meeting details]

Town Hall Meeting – AVI-Property Assessments – Hosted by Councilman Kenyatta Johnson
Location: First Baptist Church of Paschall, 7100 Woodland Avenue, Philadelphia PA 19142.
All welcome and encouraged to attend.  Councilman Johnson will meet with residents and field questions and concerns about AVI, Mayor Nutter’s new property assessment system based on full market value of land and buildings.  (Meeting Flyer PDF).

Public Community Meeting

School Reform Commission (SRC) Action Meeting
Location:  School District Headquarters, 440 North Broad Street, Auditorium, Philadelphia PA.
Open to the public, all welcome to attend.  Pepper supporters were well-represented, advocating strongly for Pepper to remain open as a vital educational and social resource for the community.

Location:  School District Headquarters, 440 North Broad Street, Auditorium, Philadelphia PA.

Wednesday, January 16, 2013 – 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Facilities Master Plan (FMP) Community Meeting, for Southwest Phila Schools.
Location:  Bartram High School, 2401 South 67th Street, Philadelphia PA.
Open to all parents and community stake-holders.  EFNC attended in force, expressing support for keeping Pepper Middle School open.  EFNC board members Debbie Beer and Reverand Darian Thomas spoke in support of Pepper.  Pepper School Meetings PDF Flyer.

Tuesday, November 20, 2012 – 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Public Community Meeting

Location:  Pepper Middle School, 2901 South 84th Street, Philadelphia PA.
Eastwick Friends & Neighbors Coalition and Councilman Kenyatta Johnson jointly hosted this community meeting, with over 100 people in attendance.  Local District Councilman Kenyatta Johnson announced he was pulling the rezoning bill that would’ve allowed Korman Company to proceed with proposed development of 722 rental apartments on 35 acres of green space adjacent to John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge.  The room erupted in applause as he acknowledged, “the community has spoken, and spoken loudly.”  The Philadelphia Water Department, Office of Emergency Management, and Department of Licenses & Inspections (L&I) were also present, each confirming their commitment to work with the Eastwick community to address flooding problems and other issues.  Nov 20 Community Meeting Flyer (PDF).

City Council Eastwick Flooding Hearing
Location:  Philadelphia City Hall, Room 400.
STAND UP FOR EASTWICK!  This critically important City Council Hearing addresses flooding concerns in Eastwick, in the context of a healthy, sustainable future for the community.  Over 100 residents and supporters attended, presenting compelling testimony about the scope of flooding and the impact of development on the neighborhood, including Heinz Refuge. City Council Meeting FlyerThanks for attending.

EPA HOSTS “OPEN HOUSE” about  CLEARVIEW and FOLCROFT LANDFILLS
Location:  Eastwick Recreation Center, 80th Street and Mars Place, Philadelphia PA 19153.

Coalition Meeting
Location:  Eastwick Wellness Center, 2821 Island Avenue, Eastwick Philadelphia, PA.
– Reverand Dr. Horace Strand spoke about the goals and successes of the Chester Environmental Partnership (CEP) in Chester County, and his role as Vice Chairman of the National Environmental Justice Advisory Council (NEJAC).
– Dennis Winters of Sierra Club Philadelphia, and Nick Rogers of Clean Air Coalition, each spoke briefly, expressing firm support of EFNC mission, and offering the resources and expertise of their respective organizations.

– Principal Yolanda Armstrong of Pepper Middle School highlighted achievements and challenges of Pepper School students; expressed delight and support of community involvement.
– Committees identified and volunteers solicited to accomplish specific tasks in short window of time.
– Councilman Johnson advised that he will reintroduce the zoning bill to City Council in September.
